Review Management

The practice of systematically collecting, monitoring, and responding to customer reviews across online platforms.

Review management is the systematic process of collecting new customer reviews, monitoring existing reviews across platforms, and responding to all reviews in a timely and professional manner. For home service contractors, review management is one of the highest-leverage marketing activities available — it directly affects Google Maps ranking, customer trust, and conversion rate at every stage of the buying process.

Effective review management has three components. Collection: a consistent system for asking every customer for a review after every completed job, using a direct text message with a link rather than a verbal ask or email. Monitoring: tracking new reviews across Google, Yelp, Facebook, and other relevant platforms so nothing goes unnoticed. Response: replying to every review — positive and negative — within 48 hours.

Responding to reviews matters more than most contractors realize. Google treats review responses as a signal of business activity and customer engagement, which positively affects ranking. Homeowners reading reviews also read the contractor's responses — a professional, thoughtful response to a negative review often converts skeptical readers more effectively than five additional positive reviews.

For negative review responses specifically: acknowledge the issue, apologize for the experience, and offer to resolve it offline ("please call us at [number]"). Never argue or make excuses. A negative review handled well becomes a trust signal rather than a liability — it shows future customers that the contractor takes accountability and resolves problems when they arise.
